How Much Do Acting Classes Cost in Los Angeles in 2026?

If you have ever searched for acting classes in Los Angeles, you have probably discovered a fascinating industry tradition: making you work surprisingly hard to find out how much anything costs.

Some schools publish their prices. Some want you to call. Some offer monthly memberships. Others sell six-week intensives, private sessions or programs that require a longer commitment.

So, how much should you actually expect to spend on acting classes in Los Angeles in 2026?

The short answer

Prices vary considerably depending on the teacher, class size and format, but current published rates show that ongoing Los Angeles acting classes commonly fall around $250–$400 per month.

Short courses and intensives can cost approximately $550–$950 or more, while private acting coaching often falls somewhere around $80–$250 per hour.

That is a big range because you are not necessarily buying the same thing.

A four-hour scene study class with 20 actors is very different from an hour spent working one-on-one with a coach on your specific audition.

So instead of asking only, "How much does it cost?", ask:

What am I actually getting for that money?

Group acting classes: approximately $250–$400 per month

Ongoing group training remains one of the most common ways actors train in Los Angeles.

According to published 2026 rates compiled by LA Actor Guide, examples range from around $255 per month at Playhouse West to $335 for four classes at Howard Fine Acting Studio.

Group classes can be excellent for actors who want:

  • regular practice

  • scene partners

  • an acting community

  • exposure to other actors' work

  • a consistent weekly routine

But look beyond the monthly price.

Ask how many students are in the room and how often you will actually work.

A cheap class isn't particularly cheap if you spend three hours watching 24 other actors and get seven minutes on your feet.

Private acting coaching: approximately $80–$250 per hour

Private coaching usually costs more per hour because the entire session belongs to you.

There is no waiting for your scene partner to finish discussing their character's relationship with their father.

For one hour, your problems are the problems.

Private coaching is particularly useful when you are:

  • preparing for an audition

  • working on a self-tape

  • developing a role

  • struggling with a specific acting block

  • starting as a beginner and want individual guidance

  • trying to improve a particular skill quickly

It can also make sense for actors whose schedules make weekly group classes difficult.

At FACTOR, for example, a 60-minute individual online acting class currently costs $75, with discounted four- and eight-session packages available.

Classes are live and one-on-one, so the material, exercises and homework are selected around the individual student.

Theater students rehearse in a bright studio, gesturing around a kneeling actress; whiteboard reads BEAT, OBJECTIVE, SCENE STUDY.

Acting intensives and short courses: approximately $550–$950+

Some actors prefer structured programs rather than ongoing classes.

Current Los Angeles examples include multi-week programs in the several-hundred-dollar range, with longer or more intensive programs reaching $900 and beyond.

These can make sense if you want a defined beginning and end rather than joining an ongoing class indefinitely.

FACTOR takes a similar approach with its structured online certificate programs. The current three-month program includes 12 weekly individual sessions, while the six-month program includes 24.

The difference is that the training remains one-on-one rather than group-based.

What actually determines the price of an acting class?

A higher price does not automatically mean better training.

You are usually paying for some combination of:

The teacher's experience.A coach with extensive professional or teaching experience may charge more.

Class size.Private coaching usually costs more per hour than group training because you receive the teacher's full attention.

Location.Physical studios have overhead that online programs may not.

Length of the class.A four-hour group class and a 60-minute private session cannot be compared purely by session price.

Program structure. Some courses include career consulting, audition preparation, portfolio guidance or additional materials.

Reputation and demand.Famous does not automatically mean right for you. It often does mean more expensive.

So how much should a beginner spend?

Please don't spend your entire rent money because somebody convinced you that one legendary acting teacher will reveal the secret of crying beautifully on cue.

If you are completely new to acting, start small.

Take an introductory class. Audit a class if the studio allows it. Book one private session. Have a consultation.

Find out whether you actually connect with the teacher and their approach before making a large financial commitment.

A good acting class should challenge you. It shouldn't make you afraid to check your bank account.

Group or private: which gives you better value?

It depends on what you need.

If your goal is regular practice, community and working with scene partners, a group class can offer excellent value.

If you need focused attention, audition preparation or help solving a particular problem, private coaching may accomplish more in less time.

Many actors benefit from both.

Think of group training as your gym and private coaching as your personal trainer.

Sometimes you need reps.

Sometimes you need someone to look at what you're doing and say, "Yes, but why are you doing that with your hands?"

Don't choose an acting class by price alone

Your acting teacher can have a major influence on how you understand yourself as an actor.

Before enrolling, look at:

  • the teacher's actual professional and teaching experience

  • whether you will work regularly

  • class size

  • the teaching philosophy

  • whether the environment feels safe enough to experiment

  • whether the training matches your goals

  • cancellation and payment policies

  • whether you can try the class or speak with the teacher first

The cheapest class can waste your money.

The most expensive class can waste even more of it.

The goal isn't to find the biggest name or the fanciest studio.

It's to find a place where you actually work, learn and grow.
